Don't Be SAD

2/15/2019

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons, and is most prevalent in the winter months.  Symptoms include loss of energy, oversleeping, lack of interest in most things, hopelessness and other symptoms associated with depression.  Like any mental disorder, SAD should not be ignored.  Treatments include light-therapy, medication and psychoanalysis.

Foods for a Sore Throat

1/30/2019

It is sore throat season, and because a sore throat is often viral, you often have to just wait it out.  There are foods though that can soothe while you wait the 7-10 days.  Things like honey and lemon, blueberry-bananna smooties, and scrambled eggs all help for different reasons.  Also, cloves are anti-fungal and also have anesthetic properties.  They can provide relief from the scratchiness and pain instantly.  Add cloves to your tea.

Brain Food

1/14/2019

A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish -- rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older.  For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly.

Healthy Holidays

1/3/2019

It's the holiday season and a time of giving.  Don't give back all the health gains you've made this year, though.  Here are three important elements to staying healthy during this time of gatherings with friends and families: 1) Don't skip meals - this will prevent gorging yourself. 2) Eat small portions - you don't need to deny yourself much during this time of celebration. Just serve yourself small, taster size portions. 3) Keep moving - After a meal take a walk catch up with friends and family.

A Treats Trick

12/27/2018

During the holidays, stick to the three-bite rule for desserts: The first bite is the best, the last the grand finale, and every bite in between is the same. In three bites, you get the full dessert experience, so really focus on savoring those three and you’re less likely to overindulge.

Good Bacteria?

12/4/2018

Probiotics are also known as “good bacteria”.  Probiotics are live organisms found in fermented foods and suppliments. Probiotics promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the stomach and have been linked to a wide range of health benefits. These include benefits for weight loss, digestive health, immune function and more. Probiotics are found in fermented foods like yogurt, pickled vegetables, kimchi and sauerkraut.

Serving Size Growth

11/27/2018

Serving sizes have grown over the years.  Here are a few small examples. Twenty years ago a bagel was 3 inches in diameter and had 130 calories.  Today a bagel is 6 inches in diameter and has 350 calories. Twenty years ago an 8.5 oz soda had 85 calories.  Today a 20 oz soda has 250 calories.

Better Than Banana

11/21/2018

A banana provides a ton of potassium. And that’s a good thing, because almost every body part needs it, from your heart and kidneys to your muscles and nerves. It even plays a role in basic cell function. But bananas aren’t the only game in town. Lots of foods can provide your body with this essential mineral. Avocado, potato, watermelon and lima beans all have more potassium than a banana.
